Thailand and Laos

Veterinary support, Construction of pens, Reintroduction programmes:

The Thai Society for the Conservation of Wild Animal (TSCWA) works in various animal refuges that were build up by the government of Thailand and Laos. They were able to collect the hundreds of wild animals that became the victims of poachers and which were confiscated in the markets or on the borderlands

The TSCWA concerns itself with the veterinary treatment, which the animals need. They try to improve the living conditions of the animals in captivity by building cages and better-adapted and more spacious animal pens. They are also working on possibilities to reintroduce certain animals' back into the wild.

The most affected animals are :

  •  asiatic black bears
  •  the malaysian bears
  •  gibbons
  •  macaques
  •  langurs
  •  asian golden cats
  •  tigers
  •  clouded leopards
  •  half domesticated asian elephants.

The TSCWA is constantly looking for veterinary surgeons/assistants, biologists and zoologists who would volunteer to support their activities. In January and February 2001, we were included in their group where we decided which projects should be given financial priority.

Capital received in 2002

Liliane Maneri and her daughter Coralie have generously offered to finance the new pens for the two clouded leopards in the Pang Thong refuge in Thailand and for the Gibbon island in our centre in Laos.

Costs: 12'000 SFr.

This is a huge amount of money which has been given by the now deceased daughter and sister, Cybille Maneri, who herself was an ardent nature lover.

The confidence instilled into us by the Maneri family has been a very moving experience for all of us.

Our fundraising action of 2002, "le Petit Train de Terre et Faune", additionally brought in

3'000 SFr.

to be invested in an information/education center and a small clinic for the treatment of the animals in our centre in Laos, which is visited every year by hundreds of tourists and students. Respect and protection of the environment is as important in the field, in Asia, as it is here.

The TSCWA and Terre et Faune are very thankful!
